The Frances Centre supports dementia and delirium patients under the care of University Hopspitals Liverpool. The first Frances Centre opened at Aintree Hospital in 2024 and we will soon be opening Frances Centre Rooms at Broadgreen Hospital and the Royal Liverpool Hospital. These spaces provide a much-needed non-clinical space for patients to feel relaxed and comfortable whilst in our care. 

Staffed by NHS nurses and support staff, these dedicated spaces offer patients time away from what can often be a busy ward environment, providing enhanced support and therapies for the hospital’s older inpatients in relaxing indoor spaces, and beautiful open outdoor spaces. 

With your support we can continue the upkeep of thes crucial spaces and offer a range of activities to our patients. 

The Frances Centre was made possible with thanks to Professor Sarkar and his late wife Frances. 

Frances was born in Liverpool in 1936. From a young age, she showed compassion and kindness towards older people. She was also very creative and her passions were dressmaking, interior design, dance and music.

At seventeen, Frances began visiting care homes, devoting her spare time to chatting, organising trips out and making clothes for the residents.

Many of the people she befriended did not have families, so she dedicated an area of her own home to welcome them. She would cook meals and entertain them by playing piano, creating a haven in which they could relax and share their stories and memories, filling their twilight years with companionship and happiness.

This kindness and dedication to older people was to span the rest of her life, almost 60 years.

The Frances Centre is dedicated to the memory of Frances Sarkar for the joy she gave to so many people during her lifetime. It will continue to provide support for older people from across Merseyside to live fulfilled and happy lives.
